The First Six Weeks

For many students, the first six weeks at college are a critical period. It's a period when many students are experiencing new found freedoms, desiring to make new friends and fit in, and often postponing real studying until the realities of the first big exams and papers loom closer.  It's a time when parents may want to call, write, or email frequently.

As is the case with most of parenting, issues during this time can pose a tough balancing act between the task of helping your son or daughter establish independence effectively with the task of influencing your college student to make good choices. Key questions during this transition may include the following:

  • How are you doing?
  • Do you like your classes?
  • How is like in the resident halls?
  • How are things going between you and your roommate?
  • What are you doing for fun?
  • What's the party scene like?
  • Have you attended or joined any campus activities?
  • What kinds of activities are available?
  • Are you feeling overwhelmed?
  • What can we do to help?
  • Do you know who to talk to for help on campus?
