Each workshop will take place on the second Thursday of each month, September through May, from 7:45 to 11:30 a.m. on the Viterbo University campus.  


 

 Workshop #1 - Sept. 12, 2013: The Role of Nonprofits and their Board Members 

  • Develop insight into what it means to be a nonprofit organization
  • Examine the different roles and types of nonprofits
  • Understand civic engagement through service to nonprofits
  • Learn what it means to be a board member/trustee/fiduciary
  • Evaluate whether to accept an offer to serve on a nonprofit board
    • Questions to ask the nonprofit

  • Develop frameworks for understanding common governance issues
    • Roles of nonprofit boards - being prepared, asking the tough questions, and holding executives accountable
    • Roles of nonprofit executives - leading toward the mission

Workshop # 2 - Oct. 10, 2013: Human Resources and Volunteer Management

  • Discuss human resource processes and practices in both formal and informal nonprofit organizations
  • Learn how human resource issues in nonprofit organizations differ from those in public and for-profit organizations
  • Develop techniques to recruit qualified staff and volunteers
  • Understand what motivates, inspires, and engages your volunteers
  • Learn specific techniques for managing staff and volunteers
    • Human resource management processes and systems for both staff and volunteers
    • Dimensions of individual and organizational diversity and their implications for effective human resource management
  • Utilize performance management tools and practices as a means to drive staff commitment, development and results

Workshop #3 - Nov. 14, 2013: Project Management

  • Understand the roles of organizational planning and project management
  • Gain practical knowledge of how to identify, assess, and formulate appropriate plans
  • Become familiar with project selection methods (considering budget and other constraints)
  • Identify and manage the “triple constraints” (schedule, budget, scope, quality)
  • Broaden your understanding of the five phases of project management (initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, closure)
  • Gain insight into the nine project management knowledge areas (project integration management, project scope management, project time management, project cost management, project quality management, project HR management, project communications management, project risk management, project procurement management)
  • Gain useful project management tools and templates (project definition document, work breakdown structure, network diagram, earned value management, risk management, etc.

 


   

Workshop #4 - Dec. 12, 2013: Strategic Planning

  • Discuss strategic management and organizational planning, including ways to identify, assess and formulate appropriate strategies
  • Understand interrelatedness of strategic planning, budgeting, and operational decisions
  • Understand the board’s role in annual planning
  • Develop skills in strategic thinking and management, organizational planning, and project management, including the ability to identify, assess, and formulate appropriate strategies and plans
  • Learn processes for developing and updating mission and vision statements
  • Discuss differing approaches to environmental analysis, SWOT, PESTEL, Porters Five Forces, and Force Field Analysis
  • Understand how to create action plans and monitor progress on them
  • Learn techniques for including stakeholders in the development of plans
  • Learn how to disseminate strategic plans to drive engagement and build performance expectations

Workshop #5 - Jan. 9, 2014: Accounting and Financial Considerations

  • Accounting
    • Develop an understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and concepts including financial and managerial accounting systems
    • Analyze the use of accounting information in financial statements and other reports as needed for responsible stewardship
    • Assuring proper checks and balances - putting controls in place
  • Financial Management
    • Gain an understanding of financial management including financial planning and budgeting, management of cash flows, short- and long-term financing, and endowment management policies and practices
    • Analyze the balance sheet -- what story does it tell?
    • Discuss common financial issues -- are assets and liabilities good or bad?
    • Gain better understanding of the debt/equity ratio – what does it say about an organization’s financial health?  Where do I find the debt/equity ratio on my organization’s balance sheet?
    • Learn how to best analyze Profit and Loss Statement – what red flags should I be looking for?
    • Learn to analyze your organization’s funding sources? Does it come from many different sources, or just a few big contracts? Why is this important?
    • Develop better skills in the area of budgeting and cash flow analysis - what story does the budget tell? How often should the board review the budget throughout the year?
  • Audit Function
    • Understand the role of the treasurer and board as it relates to audits.
    • Explore best practices related to quality assurance
    • Learn to spot opportunities for improvement
    • Discuss risk assessment from different perspectives
  • Taxes
    • Differentiate the taxes nonprofits pay from those they are exempt from paying
    • Develop understanding of IRS Form 990, including the board’s responsibility in ensuring its accuracy
    • Examine Form 990 for questions that need the board member’s special attentio

Workshop #7 - March 13, 2014: Organization and Management

  • Learn proven techniques to improve your nonprofit’s approach to teamwork and group dynamics and their implications for supervision, staff development, and organizational performance
  • Discuss the role, value, and dynamics of multiple stakeholders and networks in carrying out activities and fulfilling the mission
  • Explore organizational theories and behavior as they apply to nonprofit and voluntary organizations including issues of work design and implications of operational policies and practices
  • Learn what motivates, inspires, and engages your volunteer
  • Determine the proper structure to maximize organizational capacity
  • Identify the characteristics of effective and efficient board and committee meetings

 


 

Workshop #8 - April 10, 2014: Resources – Grants, Fundraising, and Development  

  • Discuss various ways that nonprofits raise money, including the different sources of revenues in nonprofit organizations, the strategic choices and issues associated with each type of revenue, and the methods used to generate these revenues
  • Hear from experts about different ways to engage board members in fundraising
  • Explore the various forms and structures in and through which organized philanthropy occurs
  • Analyze components and elements of a comprehensive fund development process
  • Gain an understanding of the relationship between and among philanthropic gifts and grants, earned income, and government funding, and how they influence fulfillment of an organization's mission
  • Explore how your nonprofit can improve the diversification of revenue sources
  • Learn how to accurately determine the expense of fund raising
  • Understand how to budget for a development office and/or campaign and how to set reasonable outcomes for the same
