Lighting Design Guidelines

A student in the area of lighting design should have completed the bulk of design coursework (and must have completed the lighting design course; minimally the stage lighting course) and should have served as an assistant lighting designer or master electrician on at least two productions.  Crew work on lighting crews in both the Main Theatre and Black Box is desirable.

It is the expectation of the senior project that all normal design preparation take place, including but not limited to:

  • a drafted lighting plot completed and approved four weeks prior to opening (AutoCAD drafting will be accepted if printed in 1/4" scale; USITT drafting symbol standards are to be used)
  •  an instrument schedule completed four weeks prior to opening
  •  a lighting analysis of the script
  •  Q-ing details completed one week prior to first tech, scene by scene lighting sketches (as needed)
  •  work schedule completed four weeks prior to opening
  •  a specific budget itemizing all purchases (gobos, non stock gel, projection equipment, etc.) completed six weeks prior to opening.

The lighting designer may have a master electrician assigned to them, but it is expected that the lighting designer will oversee the hang and focus of the plot. The lighting designer will also be responsible for the Q-ing and finish focus or re-focus as needed. The lighting designer selects the board operator in consultation with their advisor. Student lighting designers attend all production meetings, technical and dress rehearsals, and are responsible for the light strike.

The student will meet with the faculty advisor within one week of the close of the show to discuss the project self assessment, which the student will complete within two weeks of the show. The project self assessment will be turned in (as a formal paper) to the advisor for the project..
