Fall 2014 Special Topics Course Descriptions


ENGL-486-001 Tolkien: Myth and Theology- 3 credits
This course will study Tolkien's The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, examining the works' historical, mythological, and religious themes.  This course does not satisfy requirements for English majors or minors.  Approved as Literary Analysis/G6 course.

SOWK-486-001 Transfer Student Bridge Course - 1 credit
The course will provide a bridge for new transfer students who are admitted directly to the professional phase of the social work program without taking SOWK-210 Introduction to Social Work or SOWK-275 Introduction to Professional Practice at Viterbo University.  Foundational social work concepts will be reviewed such as professional values, generalist social work, the planned change process, strengths perspective and empowerment, levels of social systems, the NASW Code of Ethics and ethical decision-making processes.  Students will become familiar with resources to support academic success,  policies of the Social Work Program and complete a writing assessment.  This course meets twice a week for the first half of the semester.  Grade of C or better is required to remain in the professional phase of the social work program.

SVLD-546-001 Readings in Servant Leadership - 3 credits
The readings course offers students an opportunity to focus sustained attention on a specific topic or figure within the servant leadership field.  Examples may include: Greenleaf and his critics; biography and servant leadership.
