What is There to Do Besides Drink?

Most college students don't make high-risk drinking choices; in fact, sizable percentages never or seldom drink. What do they do instead? Campus peer educators in Connect Club have surveyed students several times to find out what they do for fun. Here are some of their answers:

  • run
  • go to a movie
  • canoe on the Mississippi River
  • go to a dance club
  • shop
  • call a good friend… read a good book
  • snowmobile
  • volunteer at the Place of Grace
  • play board games
  • play intramural volleyball
  • get lost on purpose and see what you discover
  • try a new restaurant
  • write a poem
  • email
  • sing a song…have a staring contest
  • invite a bunch of friends over and have a movie night
  • go for a long walk
  • play hockey
  • hang-out with a friend…visit your family…work out in the Mathy Center
  • surf the net
  • draw
  • paint
  • rent a hotel room with your friends for no particular reason
  • enjoy nature
  • laugh with other people being crazy
  • play tennis
  • join a club
  • wear a totally trendy outfit from the 80s
  • stand on top of Granddad's bluff
  • cheer on the V-hawks (admission is free with a student ID)
  • be in a play
  • travel
  • stay up all night
  • play soccer
  • play baseball
  • go on a scavenger hunt
  • skiing
  • snowboarding at Mount La Crosse
  • fishing
  • go to SAB's free movies at the Rivoli
  • write letters
  • decorate your apartment
  • make cookies…talk with friends at Mugshots, the campus coffeehouse
  • stay in your PJ's all day
  • watch a sunrise
  • have a triple scoop ice cream cone
  • star gaze
  • play ping pong in the Hawk's Nest
  • go to one of the aerobics classes
  • gaze at the stars

  • be a Big Brother or Big Sister
  • listen to music
  • walk to Riverside Park and watch the sunset
  • cheer on the Packers or the Vikings
  • cook a meal with friends
  • enjoy late night free pizza in the Union
  • go to a Viterbo theater production (they're awesome, and students get reduced rates)
  • play a game of volleyball in the Mathy Center…go to SAB's free bowling nights
  • learn how to play the guitar
  • go to the Myrick park zoo
  • go on one of the city's boat cruises
  • have deep conversations at a local coffeeshop
  • join a vocal music group
  • try a campus ministry activity (there's something scheduled every Thursday afternoon)
  • volunteer at the Boys and Girls' Club
  • or check out an SAB comedy act.

In additional to these ideas, several campus groups coordinate social activities for students. Check out regularly scheduled activities sponsored by Student Activities Board (SAB), Residence Hall Council (RHC), and Intramurals. There are also numerous campus clubs for students to join.

Plus, students are admitted for free to all V-Hawk games and matches and get significant reductions on ticket prices for the Fine Arts Center events.
