Master of Arts in Education
Viterbo University's School of Education prepares educators who are grounded in Franciscan values and possess the knowledge and skills to be reflective decision makers for the 21st century.
The Master of Arts in Education degree program at Viterbo University provides professional teachers with a meaningful and exciting avenue for personal growth and development. It is designed to provide teachers with skills in reading, evaluating, and conducting classroom action research. Action research can lead to improved methods, sound evaluation, and new opportunities to learn, develop, hone, and practice skills that can be applied directly in the classroom. Viterbo's program, however, looks beyond professional knowledge. Viterbo faculty believe that personal growth and development, the questioning of values, and an appreciation for the mission of the teacher are also important elements of a teaching profession. Pride in and an appreciation for the importance of teaching are keystones in the Viterbo program philosophy and mission.

Program Requirements: The Master of Arts in Education is awarded to degree candidates who successfully complete admission and program requirements of 30 credits of graduate course work, which includes 15 credits in Core courses and 15 credits in elective coursework.

Core Coursework Area = 15 credits:
EDUC 600 Ethical Issues in School and Society: Past, Present, and Future = 3 credits
Students in this course are charged with examining the role of an educator as a moral steward. Students will be asked to think about the individual role that they assume in achieving and maintaining a more democratic and ethical society through education. Investigations into controversial ethical issues and dilemmas prepare educators to critically think through potential situations that may arise with students, parents, administrators, and peers. Students will look at the overview of the systemic nature of education and schooling, with emphasis on the role of the teacher. Students will be introduced to the concept of learning in community, and the concept of nurturing and care for the system of education. The lens of the Viterbo values will be utilized and applied to teachers' roles in the educational system. These values are contemplation, hospitality, integrity, stewardship, and service. Using these values as a lens, students will review and take a stand on critical issues facing education at the present time.
EDUC 601 Educational Research I = 3 credits
This course provides an overview of educational research theory and practice. Teachers will design an approved research project on an approved educational topic. Prerequisite: nine credits; admission to the Master of Arts in Education program.
EDUC 602 Educational Research II = 3 credits
Teachers develop and implement a research project under the direction of their research advisor. The project will be presented during EDUC 604. Prerequisite: 601
EDUC 623 Teacher Leadership and Professional Learning = 3 credits
This course asks students to re-examine their role as one who generates change in the education system by engaging in self-reflection and self-assessment of his/her current classroom best practices. In addition, students will be asked to develop a plan for future professional growth and development, including their pedagogical strengths and their opportunities for improvement. Students will develop of professional development plan as their path to continuous improvement as an educator. Finally, teachers will produce a teaching performance self-assessment that will include videotaped segments to showcase their teaching highlights. The Viterbo values of contemplation, hospitality, integrity, stewardship, and service are expected to be visibly in student work that is submitted for the course
EDUC 604 Proseminar = 3 credits.
Proseminar integrates the ideas presented in the core courses. It includes presentation of the research project developed in EDUC 601 and 602.
Please note: Registration for EDUC 604 automatically triggers a bill for the $65 graduation fee--whether or not a student participates in commencement and without deferral of payment.
Elective Courses (May be Viterbo University license or endorsement program credits) = 15 credits. Courses are designed to introduce teachers to current methodologies and research in teaching or dealing with classroom problems, or to provide the development of skills in new technologies, new methods for improving teacher-student relationships or other pertinent topics that meet current staff and personal development needs. Students are expected to design a balanced program plan that will be approved by the Program Advisor.
Time Limit: All requirements for the master's degree must be completed within seven years from the date of application to the graduate program.
Transfer Credits: A student may request to transfer up to nine (9) semester credit hours which will be applied to a graduate degree program. Transfer credits must be graduate credits taken from an accredited institution of higher education, completed within seven years of application, taken after completion of an undergraduate degree program, and be assigned a grade of B or higher. Ordinarily only credits from other institutions taken prior to admission to the graduate program will be applied to the Master's degree.
Students who wish to transfer credits to the Viterbo Master of Arts in Education program must have the appropriate official graduate transcripts sent to the Program Advisor. Upon completing the review of the education related courses, the student will be sent a data sheet outlining which, if any, courses will be allowed to transfer in to the Viterbo Master of Arts in Education Program. Final decisions, on course transfer requests, are made at the discretion of the Program Advisor.
Comprehensive Examination (for all students entering the program prior to summer 2014): The written Comp Exam Registration Dates 2015-16 provides the candidate with an opportunity to process and articulate the experiences and knowledge gained during the course of study.
Electronic Portfolio (for all students entering the program beginning June 1, 2014): A component of the Master of Arts in Education program is the ongoing development of a professional portfolio, in which the graduate student is asked to record, integrate, and reflect on his/her professional experiences in the graduate program.
